1990 Ford Sierra XR4x4i 24v Cosworth Conversion
The Project

On a dark and rainy evening in 2001 I had the idea to put 24v power into my XR4x4i. A project that would give usable power through a manual box into a stealth, standard looking Sierra.

Through my experience in fettling with Fords I was knew exactly what, and more importantly how to do it.

So, an engine was sourced along with many other gubbins, and many cold nights spent in the garage later - it was in there!

The beast offered me a 2 years of unhindered enjoyment, with tinkering and the addition of new bits to optimise the performance and handling.

Sadly hard times meant i needed to have a more economical vehicle to get around in for the purposes of work. The beast was put into hibernation, and covered in the garage for 12 months.

In June this year i decided to sell, to make way for another project, something M power i thinks.

Although having a stealth machine has its advantages, not everyone would be taken by the idea of having a sun-blemished red Sierra, so I decided to get it painted and back on the road.

The beast emerged, with shiny new paint. The addition of new ford badges and ST200 rims had improved its aesthetic appearance. A thorough all over clean, and it sailed through its MOT in October.

Nothing in this project has been scrimped upon. I have all the receipts detailing my vast expenditure on good quality parts. It has been maintained to an excellent standard. There is no sorts of service history, as the people that build these custom vehicles usually end up servicing them. Besides, there is not really a lot to service; oil, fluids, disk's & pads when they need doing, that's your lot.

Engine & Transmission & Exhaust
  • 24v Granada Cosworth Engine. Removed from a 1991 H-reg, that had a new engine bought from Graham Goode. The estimated mileage of the engine is circa 50k
  • MTX-75 Gearbox. Manual 5 speed.
  • 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth clutch.
  • K&N filters. Large cone on inlet, small breather on crank case vent return.
  • New radiator and electric cooling fan. The original viscous coupling has been removed for extra power.
  • Stainless hand crafted custom back box on exhaust system. (4" tail pipe)
  • Black Diamond middle section on exhaust system.
  • Catalytic converters removed, not needed for MOT as pre '92.
  • Estimated 225 b.h.p. The 24v engine is 200 b.h.p. as standard, so without a viscous fan and catalytic converters, an exhaust and induction kit an estimated gain of 25 horseys.
Suspension & Wheels & Brakes
  • Avo coilovers all round, fully adjustable, set at -35mm for optimum handling.
  • ST200 17" alloys with 4 near new tyres.
  • Powerflex poly bushes on entire front end, also rear shocks (come as standard).
  • 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth brakes all round. Up-rated grooved front disks.
  • Goodridge stainless steel brake hoses all round.
Body & Interior
  • G-reg XR4x4i Ford Sierra shell. As clean as you like. 78k genuine miles.
  • Fully repainted in Ford Radiant Red, August 2005.
  • Dark tint rear lights (come as standard)
  • Recaro front cloth seats. From H-reg Escort RS Turbo. Unmarked and unmolested.
  • Momo Millennium steering wheel.
  • Electric oil pressure gauge mounted on front of original Ford amp.
  • Head Lining re-covered in charcoal grey deep shag fluff (see photo)
  • No stereo. The engine just sounds too nice.
